Support Recording and Playback of New Triple- and Quadruple-Layer Blu-ray Discs, a World First*1
Sharp Introduces AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Recorders Featuring Disc Drives that Support BDXL™*2

On July 16, 2010, Sharp Corporation held a press conference in Tokyo to present its new AQUOS Blu-ray Disc recorders with disc drives that support the BDXL™ format and triple-layer Blu-ray Disc media.

These AQUOS Blu-ray Disc recorders support the new BDXL™ format for Blu-ray Discs that enables large-capacity storage of TV programs. The BD-HDW700/BD-HDW70 recorders enable recording and playback of triple- and quadruple-layer Blu-ray Discs, a world first*1 , and will be available in Japan beginning July 30, 2010. BDXL™ is a new format for multi-layer recordable Blu-ray Discs that expands the recordable storage capacity available on a single disc. The BDXL™ format allows for additional recording layers beyond the current dual-layer format (with up to 50GB in storage capacity) to provide triple-layer discs (100GB) and quadruple-layer discs (128GB).

This disc drive is the first in the world to support recording and playback of BDXL™ conformant media and was developed by Pioneer Digital Design and Manufacturing Corporation (PDDM), a joint venture of Sharp and Pioneer Corporation in the optical disc business.

Sharp will also release the VR-100BR1 triple-layer Blu-ray Disc media (write-once) that conforms to the BDXL™ format specification, a world first.*3 This disc media boasts a storage capacity of 100GB, twice the 50GB storage capacity of existing dual-layer discs.
