Sharp at CEATEC Japan 2018

Sharp theme: Eight solutions through 8K and AIoT*

Sharp Corporation will take part in CEATEC Japan 2018 at the Makuhari Messe convention center (Mihama-ku, Chiba City). To be held from October 16 to 19 (Tuesday to Friday), this year’s CEATEC aims to facilitate the realization of Society 5.0, the ultra-smart society.

Sharp will display 8K products in response to the start of 4K/8K satellite broadcasting, scheduled to begin in Japan on December 1, 2018. It will also offer eight solutions through 8K and AIoT under its business vision of ‘Changing the world with 8K and AIoT.’ Visitors can experience what this vision means in the various examples of revolutionary styles of living and business on display in the Sharp booth.

  • * AIoT: A word coined by Sharp, combining the words AI (artificial intelligence) and IoT (Internet of things). Exhibit Highlights

I. 8K World, Sharp 8K product lineup compatible with the new 4K/8K satellite broadcasts

  • • 8K World encompasses Sharp’s 8K lineup, compatible with the new 4K/8K satellite broadcasts and capable of bringing ultra-detailed images and sound. Visitors can experience the second-generation AQUOS 8K, on display for the first time in Japan, and a new world of sight and sound via Sharp’s 8K peripherals.

II. Eight solutions through 8K and AIoT

  • 1. 8K image distribution solutions
    • • Sharp will demonstrate a system, comprising an 8K video camera and an editing system, for easy shooting and editing of 8K content.
    • • 8K video transmission technology utilizing 5G (the next generation of mobile communications) and the cloud will be used to display images on a 70-inch 8K monitor.
  • 2. 8K medical solutions
    • • See how 8K images can be utilized in the field of medicine.
  • 3. 8K and AIoT solutions for education and research
    • • The Interactive 8K Museum uses an ultra-high-definition 8K monitor to show how to offer students and museum patrons a richer learning experience. Visitors can also see firsthand realistic 8K 3D and easy-to-create 8K content.
    • • The booth will feature an English learning program for children using the RoBoHoN robotic mobile phone, browser-type programming tools for learning programming, and results of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) measurements performed by an AGEs sensor, explained by RoBoHoN.
  • 4. AIoT retail solutions
    • • Sharp will introduce new solutions for restaurants using AI, and products and services that help offset the labor shortage at restaurants and shops, such as a self-ordering system using an alert bell.
    • • A sales information analysis system by customer gender, combining an image sensor and POS data.
    • • Dialogue signage automatically responds to questions in Japanese, English, and Chinese.
  • 5. AIoT platform solutions
    • • Sharp will show its AIoT platform, which includes IoT-compatible products, AIoT modules capable of speech recognition, and a hardware application programming interface (API) that links with other companies’ cloud services.
    • • Visitors will see how Sharp is working with companies in other industries on initiatives such as on validity verification of lifestyle data and data linking that realizes smart lifestyles.
  • 6. AIoT smart home solutions
    • • Visitors can experience how AI makes possible a smart home life by linking AIoT products and services across a wide range of categories.
    • • The AIoT Smart Home will offer optimal appliance operation and services through TVs, smartphones, and other products, using AI to analyze data from AIoT devices to learn home occupants’ living patterns and preferences.
  • 7. AIoT home energy solutions
    • • A cloud-based energy controller links with a solar storage battery for smart home energy management. The smart home will link the energy controller to products like automatic shutters and air conditioners for comfortable, environmentally friendly living.
    • • A solar charging stand charges smartphones using the power from solar panels.
  • 8. AIoT pet solutions
    • • Working with Tottori University, Sharp has developed a cat litter tray equipped with the Pet Care Monitor, which automatically measures, records, and analyzes the pet’s urine volume and frequency, the pet’s weight, amount of time spent in the litter tray, and other factors, and sends these reports to the owner’s smartphone.
    • • Also on display will be a vital statistics system for dogs, developed jointly with Osaka Prefecture University. It not only measures pulse rate and respiratory rate, but also measures the autonomic nerve balance of dogs, a world first.

III. New initiatives

  • • Sharp recently acquired Toshiba Client Solutions Co., Ltd. and will show how it is maximizing this acquisition through a number of solutions using Toshiba’s dynabook notebook PC.
  • • The booth will feature an 8K-equivalent monitor made up of four 45-inch 4K monitors.
  • • Proprietary special devices on display create added value for 8K products. These include the 8K TV system on chip (SoC) and the 8K camera CMOS image sensor (CIS).
  • • Visitors can see the product features and technologies of Sharp’s first smartphone with an organic EL display.
  • • Sharp is supporting tech startups through its SHARP IoT.make Bootcamp, an open incubator that makes available to new business ventures the company’s manufacturing technology and other knowhow.

IV. Conferences

Sharp will hold seminar-style conferences in the booth’s event space that showcase key themes that the company and its various partners are pursuing in areas such as 8K and AIoT. Visitors are welcome to attend these interactive discussion events.
