Sharp Corporation is proud to announce that two of its products have won a 2021 Red Dot Design Award. The two products are the AQUOS sense5G smartphone and the 8A-C22CX1 Theater Bar System.

Founded in 1955, the Red Dot Design Award has been one of the world’s most prestigious design awards for 66 years. Prizes are given out in three categories: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept. Sharp’s winners this year were in the Product Design category.

Sharp remains committed to designing products that are appealing and easy to use—products that bring happiness to people’s lives .

  • AQUOS sense5G Smartphone

AQUOS sense5G is the first 5G-compatible model in Sharp’s AQUOS sense line of smartphones. The AQUOS sense line is very popular in the Japanese market, where consumers value its solid range of smartphone features. The phone uses a highly energy-efficient IGZO LCD and a large-capacity battery. These combine to give users super-fast 5G communication and a battery life of one week*1 between charges.

The phone comes in a compact size that makes it easy to hold. It has an aluminum body, unlike many smartphones that use glass or plastic for the back panel. Aluminum makes the phone highly sturdy and durable, while also allowing distinctive colors and surface finishes.

  • 8A-C22CX1 Theater Bar System

This soundbar is the first of its kind in the industry*2 to support 22.2-channel audio input of MPEG-4 AAC, the audio format for 8K broadcasts. By connecting the 8A-C22CX1 to an 8K TV via an HDMI cable, users get high-quality audio that makes full use of 22.2-channel audio signals. It’s the ideal match for the superb visual quality of ultra-high-definition 8K images.

The soundbar uses the new OPSODIS*3 technology. Even with a simple set-up of a front speaker and sub-woofer, users can experience fully enveloping, realistic 3D surround sound. The round design of the front speaker evokes 3D sound and makes for a pleasant accent in the living room.

*1 Based on actual measurements of using the phone according to a Sharp in-house standard assuming 1 hour of use a day, mainly phone calls and text messages, and 23 hours in standby mode (based on Sharp survey). The number of hours without charging may decrease depending on actual usage, such as gaming and watching videos.

*2 As of April 15, 2021, based on Sharp survey, for theater bar systems/soundbars that connect to televisions.

*3 OPSODIS is a 3D sound reproduction technology jointly developed by the Kajima Technical Research Institute of Kajima Corporation and the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton.
